Stephen Sanford in Bloomfield Hills on 08/13/12


Stephen Sanford was born in South Bend, IN and began his ballet studies at the age of eight at Southhold Dance Theater. At the age of 15, he received a scholarship to dance at North Carolina School of the Arts under the direction of Duncan Noble. He then went on to train in the Balanchine style under the direction of Dan Duell and Patricia Blair at Ballet Chicago Studio Company. He has also trained with the School of American Ballet and Houston Ballet.  Stephen has performed as a guest artist with the Tulsa Ballet in Romeo & Juliet as well as the role of Von Rothbart in Swan Lake for St. Louis Ballet under the direction of Gen Horiuchi. He joined the Grand Rapids Ballet Company in 2001, and has the opportunity to work with some renowned choreographers. Some of Stephen’s most memorable roles include The Moor in Jose Limon’s The Moors Pavane, James Maybrick in Gordon Pierce Schmidt’s Jack the Ripper, Dracula in Roger Van Fleteren & Wes Chapman’s Dracula, and Romeo in Mario Radacovsky’s Romeo & Juliet. He enjoys teaching technique, partnering and repertory ballet classes at the School of the Grand Rapids Ballet. Stephen and his wife Jennifer have two daughters, Julia and Elaina, and a son, Andrew.
