| Mary Geiger Named President of Regional Dance America Bloomfield Hills, MI – Mary Geiger, founder and artistic director of the Michigan Classic Ballet Company, has been named President of Regional Dance America (RDA). Promoting the artistic development of regional dance companies throughout the United States, RDA is a national association of ballet companies dedicated to nurturing dance as a performing art, regardless of style in every American city. “As President, my goal is to continue the mission that RDA has dedicated itself to for the past 50 years”, says Geiger. In her new role, Geiger, who previously served as vice president of RDA and continues to serve as president of the MidStates Regional Ballet Association, will recognize and promote the works of over 90 ballet companies throughout the US, educate the general public and media on the art of dance and strive to continue to grow RDA. Founded in 1988, RDA continues the important work that was started in 1956 by the National Association of Regional Ballet (NARB). The NARB contributed to the decentralization of dance and under its auspices, regional companies grew in stature and quality nationwide. The five regional organizations from the Pacific coast to the Northeast include over 2,000 dancers and 90 companies and provide young aspiring dancers the opportunity to perform at regional festivals where they encounter renowned master teachers and a broad array of scholarship opportunities. Not only do RDA companies also provide their local communities with high-quality dance productions, they contribute to their community’s economic well-being. Collectively, RDA companies are responsible for generating nearly 36 millions dollars within their local economies. Mary Geiger is the founder and Artistic Director of the Michigan Classic Ballet Company (MCBC) which is in its 15th year as a Regional Dance America honor company. MCBC has collaborated with Interlochen Arts Academy Dance Ensemble, Ballet Bulgaria, the Birmingham Bloomfield Orchestra and others, bringing high quality ballet productions to Southeastern Michigan area for 18 years, such as Giselle, Coppelia, Cinderella, annual The Nutcracker and upcoming in 2008, Swan Lake. Celebrating its 22nd year, Geiger has also been the Director of her own school, the Geiger Classic Ballet Academy (GCBA). GCBA is dedicated to the serious study of the art and appreciation of classical ballet and offers exacting and disciplined training at every level of instruction. Mary Geiger danced professionally for over ten years with three major European companies, and culminated her career as Principal Dancer with the Royal Ballet of Flanders (Antwerpen, Belgium). Geiger has given master classes at Western Michigan University, Interlochen Dance Academy, Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre, Nyon and Vesoul, France. She has been a guest choreographer and master teacher for regional ballet companies in Louisiana and Georgia.
