Summer Intensive Guest Faculty

Laura Alonso (July 28-August 1)

Laura Alonso, the daughter of world famous ballerina Alicia Alonso and famous teacher and
coach Fernando Alonso is herself known as a teacher, coach, and expert at staging the
renowned classics. During the 1990 Jackson International Ballet Competition, Laura
Alonso was honored with an award as the best coach at the competition. Her student, Jose
Manual Carreno, won the Grand Prix de Ville, the highest award of the competition.  Ms.
Alonso has served as a coach, jury member and teacher at the Jackson International Ballet
Competition and as a jury member of the Concours International de Dance de Paris, France
1998, the Alicia Alonso International Ballet Competition, and other competitions around the
world.

Along with her expertise in working with professionals and aspiring professionals, Ms.
Alonso is extremely gifted at working with young dancers of all ages and experiences.  
Students love her and outdo themselves to fulfill her expectations.  A very positive teacher,
Alonso has transformed students in just a few classes. She is particularly an inspiration to
male students.  Alonso's mission is to bring the highest quality dance to students
everywhere. She is willing to instruct anyone who wants to learn.  

Although born in the United States, Alonso is a resident of Havana where she has an
international dance school, Centro Pro Danza, which welcomes 1500 students, and a
professional performing company, The Ballet Classic of Havana.

A teacher of world-class experience, Ms. Alonso has taught for the Cuban National Ballet,
the Royal Danish Ballet, the Australian Ballet, Les Grands Ballet Canadiens, Pittsburgh
Ballet Theatre, the Cleveland and San Jose Ballet, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the Tokyo
Ballet, the Toronto Ballet, the Alberta Ballet and others. She was a member of the faculty at
the Regional Dance America's National Festivals in 1997and 2007 as well as at the
RDA/NE Festival 1998 and the RDA/SE 1999.  For seven years, she served as the personal
coach for international ballerina Alicia Alonso.

Ms. Alonso's twenty-five year performing career has included soloist work in all of the
traditional classics and today she travels around the world teaching and staging the
classics for professional and pre-professional companies alike.

Luba Gulyaeva (August 4-8)

Luba Gulyaeva was educated at the Vaganova Ballet Academy in Leningrad, USSR. She
was a soloist with the Kirov Ballet Theatre for seven years, dancing featured roles in
Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, La Bayadere, and Don Quixote. In the 1980's, she was invited by
Mikhail Baryshnikov to join the staff of American Ballet Theatre where she taught company
class and coached the dancers. Ms. Gulyaeva also taught all levels at the ABT school.
Additional teaching credits include the Australian Ballet in Melbourne, the School of
American Ballet in New York, and seminars on the Russian Teaching Method at numerous
universities in the US.

Ms. Gulyaeva is a master teacher and coach. She is currently ballet mistress for the New
Jersey Ballet Company, and is also on faculty at the Long Island Ballet and Steps in New
York City. She has coached participants for the International Ballet Competition and also
auditions students for major ballet companies throughout the US.  Ms. Gulyaeva has also  
been on faculty at the Regional Dance America Annual Performance/Choreography
Conference and has taught  master classes at numerous RDA Festivals.

Sean Kelly (August 11-15)

Sean Kelly is currently the Dance Supervisor for the touring Broadway musical Movin’ Out by
Twyla Tharp with music by Billy Joel. He was previously the Supervising Dance
Captain/swing for the 1st National tour of the show and also assisted in staging the
production in London’s West End. Previous to
Movin’ Out he was the Dance Supervisor and
swing for the touring production of the musical
Swing, which was performed extensively
throughout the US and Japan.

Mr. Kelly trained at the Marin Ballet. He danced for two years with American Ballet Theater II.
Mr. Kelly also performed for many years with Houston Ballet where he became principal
dancer, performing lead roles in
Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle and The Nutcracker.
He later became Ballet Master. Mr. Kelly also choreographed two ballets for the company,
Sinuosity and Patterns.  He had the opportunity to perform works by many world-renowned
choreographers such as Ben Stevenson, George Balanchine, Paul Taylor, Christopher
Bruce, and Stanton Welch.

Mr. Kelly has been a guest artist and teacher with numerous regional companies in the
US, the Dominican Republic, and Guam.

Barbara Pontecorvo (August 18-22)

Barbara Pontecorvo danced professionally for twenty years and has taught ballet for most of
her career. She was principal dancer with five ballet companies, including Dayton Ballet,
where she was also Director of Dayton Ballet II and Associate Director of the Dayton Ballet
School. Ms. Pontecorvo is currently Director of her own ballet school, Pontecorvo Ballet
Studios, and also serves as Artistic Director of Gem City Ballet. She sets the ballets of
Stuart Sebastian on companies internationally.
