It is the goal of the Michigan Classic Ballet Company to bring quality ballet to the greater
Detroit area. This idea was spearheaded by the dream of Artistic Director Mary Geiger
to return to Detroit and offer the art community the same experience and quality that was
afforded to her. As part of a previous dynasty with Sandra Severo, the Artistic Director of
The Severo Ballet a tradition was begun, bringing to our city audiences, professional
quality ballets such as The Nutcracker and various repertoire in The Kresge Series.
Founded in 1989, the Michigan Classic Ballet Company (MCBC) offers a performance
outlet for young aspiring dancers while providing superior ballet such as the holiday
favorite, The Nutcracker, Coppelia, Swan Lake and Cinderella. MCBC is a member of
the Midstates Regional Ballet Association/Regional Dance America (MSRBA/RDA), a
select group from over 100 companies across America that provides master classes,
performances, scholarships and seminars each year. Over the years producing several
successful dancers that have gone on to professional ballet companies such as
Houston Ballet School, Dayton Contemporary Dance, Arizona Ballet and National
Winnipeg Ballet School, Mary Celeste Geiger has been the Founding Artistic Director of
MCBC and has been the Director of her own school, the Geiger Classic Ballet Academy
for the past 22 years. A former principal dancer with the Royal Ballet of Flanders and
other European companies, Geiger also sits as president of Regional Dance America
(www.regional-dance-america.org).
