The Young Choreographer’s Project

The Young Choreographer’s Project (YCP) goal is to examine the process of creation through the art of choreography. Dancers are provided with concrete tools to explore and cultivate their own artistic process, in addition to paying respect to the occurrence of a flash of inspiration! The budding choreographer will learn how to build the basic techniques of the craft and develop a better understanding of the inspired concepts fundamental to professional choreography.

The Young Choreographer’s Project will meet three times throughout the year. Two weekend workshop (Fall & Spring) will begin with a field trip to research, explore and advance ideas for movement and conclude in the studio for the project work.
The summer weeklong contemporary intensive at Geiger Ballet will lay the ground work for ideas and advance the craft.

The curriculum will include:
Isolating Choreographic Elements
Combining Theory and Practice
Improvisation
Exploration of time, space, energy, meter, form and stillness to build movement
Building Sequences
Choreographic Devices

The dancers will also develop a concept which will include the following:
A short phrase of movement
Title and music
Costume concept presentation
Casting
Lighting and stage design presentation
Choreographers must be 12 or older
